history

Pewek was created in 1933 in connection with the exploration of raw materials on Chukotka and plans to use the Northern Sea Route. It was named after the 518  m high mountain Peekinei ( Пэкиней , thick mountain , from the Chukchian peek or pewek for thick ).

In Pewek the administration of several penal camps was located in the Gulag system , for example that of the Tschauntschukotlag from 1949 to 1957 and that of the Tschaunlag (named after the Tschaun river, which flows further south into the bay of the same name ) from 1951 to 1953 . Up to 11,000 people were temporarily detained in these camps. In 1967 the place received city rights.

With the economic crisis of the 1990s and the decline of the Northern Sea Route, the population dropped dramatically.
