Kantschalan ( Russian Канчала́н ) is a village (selo) in the Chukchi Autonomous Okrug ( Russia ) with 629 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The place lies in the tundra on the right bank of the eponymous river Kantschalan , which flows into the estuary of the river Anadyr opposite the city of Anadyr from the left . Immediately above Kantschalan the two great river arms of the Kantschalan unite, forming a 30 km long and up to 15 km wide island to the north: the left Nowy Kamchalan ("New Kantschalan") and the right Stary Kamchalan ("Old Kantschalan").
Kantschalan is part of the Anadyrski district and is located about 60 km northwest of the district and district administrative center of Anadyr. It is the only village in the rural municipality of the same name (selskoje posselenije).
history
The village was founded in 1952 as part of the settlement of the semi-nomadic, mainly reindeer herding , Chukchi indigenous people who still make up around 80% of the population of the place today. In the years up to 2005, the entire structure of the town was actually renewed.
traffic
Kantschalan has no fixed road connection. It can be reached in the ice-free time by ship or helicopter, in winter via an ice road on the Kantschalan from Anadyr.
