Uelen ( Russian Уэлен , Chukchi Увэлен / Uvèlen, Yupik -Chaplino Улыӄ / Ulyḳ, Yupik-Naukan Олыӄ / Olyḳ) is a village in the Chukchi Autonomous Okrug ( Russia ) with 720 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
1912 Uelen took over the function of the administrative seat of the Ujesds Tschukotski of the okrug Anadyr von Prowidenija . After Ujezd was transformed into Chukotsky Rajon in 1927, the village remained its administrative seat until it was relocated to Lavrentija in the 1940s.
At the end of his 5th Thule expedition in 1925, Knud Rasmussen was on a brief flying visit to the town. In 1934 the place hit the international headlines when the survivors of the Cheliuskin sinking were flown to Uelen in a lengthy rescue operation.
In March 2006 the adventurer Karl Bushby and his companion Dimitri Kieffer crossed the frozen Bering Strait while attempting to circumnavigate the world on foot . On April 1, 2006, they were stopped by Russian officials near Uelen for illegally crossing the border. After a lawsuit and intervention by Governor Roman Abramowitsch , Bushby was able to continue his journey.
