Mys Schmidta ( Russian Мыс Шми́дта ) is an urban-type settlement with 492 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in the north of the Chukchi Autonomous Okrug in the far east of Russia .
geography
The settlement is located on the coast of the Chukchi Sea , about 650 kilometers north of the district administrative center of Anadyr on a spit that separates the Akatan lagoon (also called Kelmantagen) from the open sea. A little to the north is the cape of the same name ( Mys Schmidta stands for Cape Schmidt in Russian ).
Mys Schmidta has belonged to the Iultinski district with the administrative center in Egwekinot since June 2008 . Previously, Mys Schmidta was the center of the Schmidtowski Rajon, which was merged with the Iultinski rajon in 2008 and was briefly called Vostotschny rajon ("Ostrajon").
history
The place was founded in 1931 as a base for the development of the extreme northeast of the Soviet Union and, like the cape, was named after the Arctic explorer, academician and politician Otto Schmidt .
As a result, various mining companies for the extraction of tin and gold (in Polyarny and Leningradski) were established in the area , the logistic center of which became Mys Schmidta. In 1954, a base for the Soviet air force was established, especially as an alternative and refueling base for their strategic bomber fleet .
In 1962 the place became an urban-type settlement and in 1973 the administrative center of an independent Rajons spun off from the Iultinski rajon.
In connection with the cessation of mining on an industrial scale for cost reasons and the closure of the air force base in the 1990s, 90 percent of the residents left the place. On May 30, 2008, the Schmidtowski rajon was merged again with the Iultinski rajon, with which the place lost its administrative function.

Economy and Infrastructure
The only branches of industry in the surrounding area today are reindeer herding and gold panning operated by members of the indigenous peoples (1625 kilograms of gold were mined in 2005).
There is a weather station in the settlement.
Immediately south of the settlement is an airport ( ICAO code UHMI ), from which there is a flight connection to Anadyr. As a legacy from the time of its military use, it has an oversized 2450 m long and 60 m wide concrete runway for the purposes of civil aviation .
