Enurmino ( Russian Энурмино ; Chukchi Иннурмин, Энурмин ) is a village (selo) in the Chukchi Autonomous Okrug ( Russia ) with 301 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The place is about 550 km as the crow flies northeast of the district administrative center of Anadyr on the Chukchi Peninsula on the coast of the Chukchi Sea , a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean , on a spit that separates the lagoon lake Enurmikynmangkak from the open sea. A few kilometers northwest of the village, Cape Netten ( Нэттэн ) protrudes into the sea, to the east a peninsula with the 440  m high summit Tykgagetan and the offshore Cape Kitsetun, in Russian also Serdze-Kamen, translated "heart rock".

Enurmino belongs to the Chukotsky Rajon and is located about 160 km north-northwest of its administrative center Lavrentija . It is the only village in the rural municipality of the same name (selskoje posselenije). Almost all of the town's residents are Chukchi .

history

The village emerged not far from an old Chukchi settlement on Cape Netten, where a polar station was initially built, from the early 1930s. The Chukchi place name Innurmin means something like "located behind the hills". It refers to the immediate hinterland of the village, the most north-westerly point of the Chukchi Peninsula, where mountains come so close to the coast, while in a westerly direction beyond the neighboring village of Neschkan , 50 km away , near the coast, a swampy plain dominates in many places.

traffic

Enurmino is not connected to the road network. The shallow water in the bay in front of the village prevents larger ships from mooring. The place is regularly approached by helicopter from the Rajonzentrum Lavrentija on the route to Neschkan.
