Michael Koß

Michael Koß (* 1976 in Alfeld (Leine) ) is a German political scientist with a focus on comparative political science , the government system of the Federal Republic of Germany and research on democracy . Together with Daniel Ziblatt, he is “one of the most prominent researchers of democracy today.” Since October 2019, Koß has been Professor of Political Science: Political System of the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Union at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg .

Life

Koß studied political science, history and law at the Universities of Göttingen , Besançon and Uppsala . He completed this course in 2002 as a Magister Artium in Political Science, Medieval and Modern History and Law at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen with the distinction very good with distinction and was employed there at the Department of Political Science as a research assistant from 2002 to 2004 . In 2004 he received a doctoral scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation . He then worked at the Department of Politics and Contemporary European Studies at the University of Sussex (2005–2006), at the Berlin Graduate School of Social Sciences at the Humboldt University in Berlin (2006–2007) and at the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford and at the Department of Political Science at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen (2007–2009). 2008 doctorate he at Peter Delete and André Kaiser with a thesis on "State financing of political parties and political competition" for Dr. disc. pole. at the University of Göttingen. The work was rated summa cum laude and Koß received the Friedrich-Christoph-Dahlmann -Prize for the "best social science doctorate" from the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen.

From 2009 to 2012 he was employed as a research assistant at the Chair of Politics and Government in Germany and Europe at the University of Potsdam . During this time he took part in the Senior Teaching Professionals Program of the Potsdam Graduate School (2011), received the Brandenburg Young Scientists Prize for his work on The Politics of Party Funding (2011) and obtained the Brandenburg University Teaching Certificate (2012). This was followed by guest stays at the Constitution Unit at University College London , at the Center de Études Européennes des Sciences Po Paris and at Stockholm University . He also received a Schumpeter Fellowship from the Volkswagen Foundation for the research project “What do parliaments actually do? Parliamentary agenda power between legitimacy, effectiveness and efficiency ”at the Chair of Political Systems and European Integration of the Geschwister-Scholl-Institute for Political Science of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich , where he was also employed from March 2013. In addition, completed a guest stay at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University (2014).

In 2018 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the development of legislative democracy in Western Europe and received a teaching qualification for political science . In the 2018/19 winter semester he represented the chair for comparative political science at the Geschwister-Scholl-Institute for Political Science at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, before he took over the chair for political systems and system comparison at the Institute for Political Science at the Technical University of Dresden in the 2019 summer semester took over. In the 2019/20 winter semester, he accepted a professorship for Political Science: Political System of the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Union at Leuphana University Lüneburg.
