Lorino ( Russian Лорино ; Chukchi Льурэн ; Yupik Нукак ) is a village with 1,267 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in the northeastern part of the Chukchi Autonomous Okrug in the far east of Russia .

geography

The village is located on the Chukchi Peninsula on the north side of the Metschigmensky Bay, southwest of the Bering Strait , a good 500 kilometers as the crow flies east of the district administrative center of Anadyr .

Lorino belongs to Russia's easternmost Rajon, Chukotsky, and is located about 35 kilometers west of its administrative seat, the village of Lavrentija . The village is the only locality in the rural community of the same name (selskoje posselenije).

In addition to Chukchi , a large number of members of the Eskimo people Yupik and Naukan live in Lorino .

history

A Chukchi settlement not far from today's village was first mentioned in the 18th century. The place name means roughly found place in the Chukchi language . In place of today's Lorino there was an Eskimo settlement called Nukak.

After the Chukotsky Rajon was founded in 1927, the village was expanded from 1933 as part of the collectivization of reindeer herding as a "cultural base" (Russian: Kultbasa ) and the central location of a collective farm . By 1943 the population rose from 52 to 171. In 1953, the members of the Eskimo people Naukan were relocated to Lorino from the village of the same name not far from Cape Deschnjow , the easternmost point of Asia; as a result, the population increased to up to 1,500.

Culture and sights

Lorino is one of the centers of Eskimo culture in northeast Chukotka. Cultural festivals take place regularly.

About 15 kilometers northeast, at the foot of the Genkanyj mountain range, the Lorinsky Klyuchi thermal springs emerge.

Economy and Infrastructure

Lorino is the center of the traditional hunt for marine mammals (mainly gray whales as well as walruses and other seals ) by the members of the indigenous peoples. An arctic fox farm has existed since 1955 .

The village can be reached by sea or air (helicopter). A 40 km long gravel road connects Lorino past the thermal springs with the Lavrentija Rajon center. The last missing larger bridges along this route over the rivers Loren, Kukun and Tschulchewejem (Bolshaya Akkani) were built between 2009 and 2011.
