history

The place was built in 1944 in connection with the construction of an airfield on the flight route over which aircraft were transferred from the United States to the Soviet Union during the Second World War under the lend lease agreement . It was named after the river, the name of which is of Yukagir origin and means roughly good river .

Today over 80% of the population are members of the indigenous peoples of the Russian north , mostly Evens who are engaged in reindeer herding , fishing and fur hunting.

traffic

Omolon has no year-round fixed land connection, but can be reached via a winter road from Bilibino. The construction of a road to Anadyr with a branch to Bilibino is planned. Omolon Airport ( ICAO code UHMN ) is located on the north-eastern edge of the town and provides connections to Anadyr, Magadan and Bilibino (Keperwejem).
