Ernst Stahel and Ernest Stahel (born March 11, 1896 in Flawil ; † June 27, 1986 ) was a Swiss physicist .

Live and act

Stahel attended the canton school in St. Gallen and received his doctorate from the ETH Zurich in 1922 (on the first members of the Actinium series ) , where he was Auguste Piccard's assistant after the teaching degree in 1920 . With his doctoral supervisor he went to the Free University of Brussels , where he was assistant and lecturer (chargé de cours) from 1922 to 1929 and associate professor from 1929 to 1945. As a collaborator with Piccard, Stahel carried out the Michelson-Morley experiment in a balloon (1926) and on the Rigi . He participated in several Solvay conferences (1933, 1948). In 1937 he became a knight of the Belgian Leopold Order .

In 1942 he returned to Switzerland to work as a high school teacher in Biel / Bienne . At the ETH Zurich, he occasionally stepped in to give lectures. In 1966 he retired.
