Jürgen Creutzberger († 1645 in Lübeck ) was a German form cutter and letter painter .

Life

Jürgen Creutzberger probably came to Lübeck from Nuremberg as a journeyman, where he worked for Christopher Diebel, the son and successor of Elias Diebel . In 1593 he acquired Lübeck citizenship and started his own business. From 1608 to 1645 he is proven to be the owner of the house at Hundestrasse 16. He bought the house from the painter Moritz van Gehrden (Gehren) , which until the Reformation had been the home of the blue singers of the Marientids . Creutzberger was in friendly contact with the town's painters. When he married Ursula Falcke, his second wife, the celebration took place in the neighboring house of the painter Johannes Willinges in Hundestr. 10 instead. According to Willibald Leo von Lütgendorff-Leinburg , Creutzberger was "undoubtedly a particularly skilled man" who had "a certain priority among his comrades".

Jürgen Creutzberger died around 1645 and left his house to his widow and children. It is likely that the Nuremberg illustrator Paul Kreutzberger († 1681) was a close relative (nephew?) Of his. The shape cutter Conrad Krautsberger, who also worked in Nuremberg and was born in Lübeck, was probably his son. In 1632 his daughter Katharine had married the letter painter and shape cutter Hans Vanselow, who at that time lived in Papenstrate until he bought his father-in-law's house in Hundestrasse from the widow and co-heirs of his father-in-law. At this time, Creutzberger's widow wanted to marry the letter painter and map maker Lorenz Schloer.

Creutzberger's main works are single-sheet woodcuts , colored with watercolors and provided with devotional texts. His imprint reads: Zu Lübeck by Jürgen Creutzberger, form cutter and letter grinder in Hundestrassen . Many of his prints have been preserved because they were glued to the interior of hymn book cabinets in the box stalls of the Jakobikirche in Lübeck .
