The Hegmatten airfield (according to ICAO designation Winterthur ) is a private glider airfield in Winterthur . The field is operated by the Winterthur glider group and is located in the Hegmatten district, right next to the football field of the same name.
history
The Winterthur glider group was founded in December 1931 and initially had its flying site at the Ziegelhütte in the Seen district . The group split up twice because of discrepancies and the lack of an own airfield was a problem even then. Due to a lack of activity, operations were temporarily suspended again during World War II , but with the entry of Hermann Geiger , who later became known as a glacier pilot, it was boosted again and the group was able to use the Allmend in Frauenfeld as an airfield. At the beginning of the 1960s, however, the space problem came up again because the Allmend was used as a howitzer training area. As a result, the Hegmatten airfield was built in Oberwinterthur in 1964 .
In the spring of 1985, the airfield had to be closed for a year because the new Hegmatten soccer field (new home of FC Oberwinterthur ) was being built and the airfield therefore had to be turned.
In 2002 the Swiss gliding championships were held at the airfield.
In 2017/2018, the airfield was closed to flight operations for 6 months due to extensive construction work. At the same time, the old hangar was demolished and a new hangar was built.
Infrastructure
There is a clubhouse and hangar at the airfield. The winch and the tow plane are available as starting aids .
