The private airfield Raron ( ICAO code LSTA ) is a former Reduit airfield and is located in the Swiss canton of Valais in the area of the municipality of Raron .

The airfield is located in the Rhone valley , 5.5 km west of Visp . Air Zermatt's Raron base (ICAO code LSER) is in the immediate vicinity .

history

The airfield was opened as a military airfield in October 1942 (ICAO code LSMN). The visible small splinter protection hangars date from that early period.

The airfield has been used for civilian purposes by the Oberwallis flight group since 1977. After the end of the Cold War, the Swiss Air Force gave up the airfield in 1995, which had an underground aircraft cavern . On January 30, 2002, the Raron airfield with its shortened runway was included by the Swiss Federal Council as a civil airfield in the civil aviation infrastructure plan.

Flight operations

Between 1992 and 2001, an average of 3350 aircraft movements per year took place at Raron airfield.
