When flight visibility ( English visibility ) is known in the aviation horizontal view in the direction of flight from the cockpit of an in flight aircraft . It is determined by the pilot .

In this context, visibility is the possibility, determined by atmospheric conditions and expressed in units of distance, of seeing and recognizing objects that are noticeable during the day and that are not illuminated and objects that are noticeable at night. The flight visibility is particularly important for visual flight , see Visual Meteorological Conditions .

In contrast, is meant by ground visibility (English: ground visibility ), the horizontal view of an airfield . The view from the cockpit downwards is called the earth view .
