Lists of aviation accidents |
In the air accident at Milan-Linate on October 8, 2001, a McDonnell Douglas MD-87 of SAS Scandinavian Airlines (flight number SK686) collided with a Cessna CitationJet CJ2 of Air Evex at Milan-Linate airport . All 114 people on board the two aircraft and four others on the ground were killed in the accident. There were also four injured. It was the worst aviation accident in Italy to date.
the accident
On the day of the accident, thick fog lay over the city airport of Milan , the visibility was less than 200 meters.
The master of the Cessna CitationJet was instructed to taxi from the western apron via the northern taxiway (R5) in the direction of the northern apron, from where the main taxiway could have been reached without crossing the runway . Instead, however, he controlled the machine via the southern runway R6, which crosses the runway.
At the same time, at 8:09:28 a.m., the SAS MD-87 was given take-off clearance for runway 36R and collided with the Cessna 35 seconds later at a speed of around 270 km / h.
In the impact, one of the occupants of the Cessna was killed instantly and the other three were burned. The Swedish captain of the MD-87 tried to take off the machine. However, since the right engine was lost on impact and the left engine lost thrust due to the sucking in of debris, the aircraft only reached a height of about 12 m and fell back to the ground. The master then tried to stop the engine, which had lost the right main landing gear , by reversing the thrust and braking . Nevertheless, the MD-87 crashed into a hangar at the end of the runway at about 250 km / h . During this and in the subsequent fire, all occupants of the machine and four Italian ground workers died. Four other hangar workers were injured.
causes
In addition to the mistakes made by the pilots of the Cessna, the Italian Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority (ANSV) also identified a number of other causes of the accident.
- At the time of the accident, the airport did not have a functioning ground penetrating radar , although its installation had already started a few years earlier. The system went into operation a few months later.
- The guidance boards along the taxiways did not meet the official guidelines. After the Cessna had mistakenly reached tarmac R6, the pilots could no longer recognize this error.
- When the pilots of the Cessna correctly stopped at a stop marker and reported their location (S4) to the ground control, they did not react because the marker was not shown on their maps.
- Neither of the two pilots of the Cessna was certified for landings with a visibility less than 550 m, but they landed only a few minutes before the accident under correspondingly poor visibility conditions.
On April 16, 2004, the Milan court found four people guilty:
- Airport director Vincenzo Fusco and air traffic controller Paolo Zacchetti were each sentenced to eight years in prison.
- The former supervisor of the air traffic controller, Sandro Gualano, and Francesco Federico, former airport manager, were each sentenced to 6½ years.
In the appeal proceedings on 7 July 2006, the two airport chiefs were acquitted, and sentenced four other people.
