In the 2015 plane crash in Medan , a Lockheed C-130 Hercules belonging to the Indonesian Air Force crashed on June 30, 2015 . The aircraft had taken off from Soewondo Air Force Base in the Indonesian province of Sumatra Utara (North Sumatra ) about two minutes earlier . According to the latest information, there were 110 passengers and 12 crew members on board . The passengers were members of the Indonesian military and their families.
Course of events
The crash occurred directly in a residential area of the provincial capital Medan , where the airport is located. At least 20 people were killed on the ground in the crash. None of the 122 aircraft occupants survived the crash.
The cause of the accident is so far unclear. A technical problem seems possible because shortly before the crash, the pilots are said to have asked for permission to return to the airport by radio. Since the aircraft was not equipped with a flight recorder , the Indonesian authorities only have the wreckage and the pilots' flight history at their disposal for the investigation. On July 1, all ammunition and two engines were recovered and brought to Jakarta for investigation. After the accident, criticism was raised of the outdated Indonesian aircraft and the allegedly inadequate safety standards.
The machine that crashed was a KC-130B with the registration number A-1310 and the serial number 3616, which was delivered brand new in 1961. The designation KC-130B was given to only two Indonesian C-130Bs (T-1309 and T-1310), which were equipped with optional under-wing tanks for air refueling.
The last major aircraft accident in Indonesia occurred on December 28, 2014 ( Indonesia-AirAsia flight 8501 with 162 fatalities). On September 5, 2005, a plane on the Mandala Airlines flight 91 also crashed in the urban area of Medan, causing a similar number of fatalities (149). Due to security concerns, Indonesian airlines were not allowed to fly to airports in the European Union between 2007 and 2009 .
