The Folkehelseinstituttet (German: Volksgesundheitsinstitut , FHI for short , also Folkehelsa or Nasjonalt folkehelseinstitutt ) is an administrative body subordinate to the Norwegian Ministry of Health ( Helse- og omsorgsdepartementet ). It is responsible for supervision, research, service and advice in the health sector . The head office is in Oslo.

history

History of origin

In 1929 the State Institute for Public Health ( Statens institutt for folkehelse ) was founded, the main task of which was initially in the area of infection protection . At the time, the agency had 18 employees, many of whom were not paid. In the 1970s, it was also increasingly active in diseases that were not caused by contagion, such as mental illnesses. Departments for toxicology and epidemiology have also been set up. In the 1980s, research was also included in the agency's remit.

From 2002 to 2003, the State Institute for Public Health was merged with other authorities. This resulted in the new organization Nasjonalt folkehelseinstitutt (German: National Public Health Institute ), with the short form Folkehelseinstituttet . This was now responsible for all national health registries, with the exception of cancer .

In the years 2005 to 2006 the area of responsibility was changed again. The FHI began to be more aware of social inequality in the health system and a mental health department was set up. It also became aware of the prevention of health impairments due to tobacco use , alcohol and drug abuse , lack of physical activity, obesity and unprotected sex . In 2007 the number of employees was around 900.

In 2011, forensic medicine was also incorporated into the authority. In 2017 the department was transferred to the University Hospital of Oslo.
