Fomivirsen is an antisense oligonucleotide and a drug which is used as an antiviral agent for the treatment of infections with the cytomegalovirus (CMV) in immunodeficiency , such as AIDS .

Fomivirsen is a 21mer antisense DNA phosphorothioate oligonucleotide (ISIS 2922) with a sequence complementary to mRNA , the major immediate-early (MIE) transcriptional unit of the human cytomegalovirus (CMV). The binding of the aRNA to the complementary mRNA blocks the translation of this viral mRNA and thus prevents the gene expression of the proteins of the IE2 region (IE2), IE86 and IE55.

Fomivirsen was the first antisense oligonucleotide to be approved by the FDA .

The commercial preparation Vitravene ® is not marketable .
