The Fondation Hardt pour l'étude de l'antiquité classique is a research center in the field of classical philology , ancient history and ancient philosophy in Vandœuvres near Geneva , Switzerland .
history
The organization goes back to a foundation of the German Baron Kurd von Hardt (1889-1958) in 1950, who wanted to contribute to the reconciliation of the Europeans by studying the common heritage of classical culture.
Equipment and management
The foundation has a plot of land in Vandoeuvres that includes a guest house, a library with around 40,000 volumes and a lecture hall. It is controlled by a Conseil de Fondation ( Board of Trustees ), the Comité de direction of which is headed by the former Swiss President Pascal Couchepin and the representatives of the financing institutions, as well as by an international Commission scientifique of specialist representatives. Today it is financed by the Swiss Confederation , the University of Geneva , the municipality of Vandœuvres, the Swiss National Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research , the French Center national de la recherche scientifique , the German Research Foundation as well as private foundations and donations.
Todays situation
Every year in the last full week of August, the foundation organizes Entretiens sur l'Antiquité classique , a meeting of outstanding specialists on a given topic, whose lectures are then published together with documentation of the discussions in the series of publications of the same name. 56 volumes have appeared so far.
In addition, the foundation has been inviting guests from all over the world, recently young and established researchers, to research stays of two weeks to two months.
