overall view

The Fontaine des Quatre-Parties-du-Monde, also Fontaine de l'Observatoire or Fontaine Carpeaux , is a monumental fountain in the Jardin Marco-Polo , halfway between the Jardin du Luxembourg and the eponymous Paris observatory . It was built between 1867 and 1874. The design comes from the French architect Gabriel Davioud , but the result is a joint effort by several artists.

The eponymous sculpture Les quatre parties du monde soutenant la sphère céleste by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux consists of four naked female figures who carry a celestial sphere on their shoulders with the signs of the zodiac and the earth in the center. The women represent the four continents with stereotypical characteristics. Their dynamic posture suggests the rotation of the earth . The sculpture stands on a plinth by Louis Villeminot decorated with bronze shells and water plants . The base of two basins with eight hippocamps as well as water-spouting fish and turtles , works by Emmanuel Frémiet , can be understood as a representation of the oceans .
