Ford-Vairogs was a production facility of the Ford Motor Company in Riga (Latvia) from 1937 to 1940.

history

The favorable economic development of Latvia in the 1930s encouraged Ford to set up its own plant in the capital of Latvia, despite the country's small size. From 1937 to 1940 Ford-Vairogs produced the following models:

  • Ford Junior (from 1937), a variant of the English Ford Ten (1172 cm³, 32 PS (23 kW), 100 km / h)
  • Ford Taunus (from 1939), the newly introduced model Ford Taunus (1172 cm³, 34 PS (25 kW), 104 km / h) in Germany
  • Ford V8 Standard (from 1938), the American type 92 (2229 cm³, 60 PS (44 kW), 120 km / h)
  • Ford V8 De Luxe (from 1938), the American type 91 (3621 cm³, 85 PS (63 kW), 135 km / h)

There were also light trucks and buses.

The mechanics and body of the vehicles were transported from Great Britain (Junior), Germany (Taunus) and the United States (V8) to Latvia and assembled there ( CKD production ). The proportion from local production was low; the planned establishment of a local supplier production could no longer be realized.

The outbreak of the Second World War and the first Soviet occupation of Latvia (1940 to 1941) led to an early end to this company. A total of around 300 passenger cars, 1,000 trucks and 200 buses were produced between 1937 and 1940.
