Ford Romana SAR (also Ford Motor Company of Romania ) was a Romanian automobile manufacturer based in Bucharest . It should not be confused with Ford Romania , which has been a car manufacturer in Romania since 2008.

history

Ford brand vehicles have been imported to Romania since 1911. The first two applications to set up an assembly plant in Romania were rejected in 1920 and 1927. In 1931, Ford founded its own subsidiary in Romania, which began operations on January 1, 1932.

American and especially Ford vehicles were very popular in Romania. Between 1929 and 1933, more than 70% of the vehicle population in Romania was of American origin. In the first half of 1935, 449 of the 1,286 cars sold were Ford models. In 1937 Ford sold 562 vehicles, significantly more than Plymouth (140), Opel (175) or Mercedes-Benz (99).

After another application to build an assembly plant was submitted in 1935 and this time approved by the government, Ford built a plant in Calea Floreasca, which was run in close coordination with Ford Great Britain . The new complex was opened on May 15, 1936. It was designed for an assembly of 2500 vehicles per year and a repair capacity of 6000 copies.

At the beginning there were 250 employees. They earned around ten times as much as a comparable employee in Romania. There were also numerous other advantages. The number of employees increased to 607 by 1942 and then decreased to 376 by the end of 1946.

After Romania sided with Germany in World War II, all imports from the USA and Great Britain were stopped. The previous support has now been taken over by Ford Germany, although the managing director has been retained. In August 1944, the Romanian government declared the company "abandoned by the enemy" and placed it under military administration.

After World War II, Ford Great Britain tried to resume trading with the Romanian company. However, this ceased operations in September 1946. The sale of the plants was banned and the employees were laid off. On November 15, 1947, the Societatea Anonimă Română pentru Producţia şi Importul de Automobile (SARPIA) took control until 1950. In 1948 the plant was nationalized.

The production facilities of the V8 engine were brought to Brasov, where the V8 engine served as the basis for powering other commercial vehicles.

The British government, which on Ford's behalf, sought £ 289,259 in compensation, received £ 10,575 in 1964 and an additional £ 15,863 in 1966.

Ford returned to Romania as a manufacturer in 2008 when it acquired Automobile Craiova and founded Ford Romania .

Models

Initially, it was planned to produce the Ford Model A. The first vehicle assembled, however, was the Ford V8 . Due to the war, car production ended in 1940.

Between 1939 and 1942, the company supplied 2,320 trucks, 200 tanks and 488 tractors to the Romanian armed forces.
