The Forges of Salles is a former steelworks and industrial heritage of the 18th and 19th centuries in Sainte-Brigitte ( department Morbihan ) and Perret ( Côtes-d'Armor ) in the region of Brittany .

geography

The smelter's facilities extend over 30 hectares and are located on the border of the two above-mentioned departments in the Forêt de Quénécan forest . The facility includes the four ponds, Étang des Salles , Étang du vieux Fourneau , Étang de la Forge Neuve , Étang du Guéhault and the Les Forges stream , which partially forms the boundary between the communes and departments.

history

The Forges des Salles were built in the years 1621–23 by Duke Henri II. De Rohan (1579–1638). The first smelter was the Protestant Geoffroy de Finement, sieur d'Angecour. The blast furnace in the forest area was operated with charcoal and was one of the largest in Brittany at the time.

In January 1795, the Forges des Salles were attacked by 1200 loyal Chouans . They were able to capture 2 cannons, rifles and powder. The neighboring Bon-Repos Monastery was occupied and set on fire in 1796.

The production of iron was stopped in 1877. The facility has remained unchanged since then and has been open to visitors since the 1990s. In 1981 and 1993 the buildings and the ensemble with garden were placed under monument protection.
