Forres Castle

Forres Castle is the name of a former fort and a former castle near Forres in the Scottish county of Moray .

The fort was destroyed by the Vikings in 850 .

Forres was raised to Royal Burgh by King David I in 1140 . The once royal castle was built as a motte around this time . In 1297 it was burned down by supporters of Wallace , but then rebuilt. Kings William the Lion and Alexander II stayed at the castle, as did King David II in 1346. The castle was fortified in the 14th century, but burned down in 1390 by the troops of Alexander Stewart, 1st Earl of Buchan .

The Dunbar Clan held the rebuilt Forres Castle until the 17th century, when it fell into disrepair. Today nothing can be seen of it above ground.
