description

The architecture of the Allahabad Fort is unique in India - on the land side it had several angular protruding walls in the style of European bastions . The fort consists of three large battlements surrounded by tall towers; the - today badly dilapidated - representative buildings stand near the river bank. Within the huge ring of walls there were plenty of open spaces for military drill and target exercises, which also served as run-out areas for horses, elephants, etc. Inside are the Jodhabai Palace and the women's quarters ( zenana ). The Patalpur Temple is also located there.

Others

  • The Saraswati Koop located in the fort area is viewed by devout Hindus as the source of the mythical Sarasvati River .
  • On the site of the fort there is an approx. 10.60 m high Ashoka column from around 230 BC. The old edicts of Ashoka were supplemented by the Mughal Mughal Jahangir with another in Persian script.
  • The Akshaya Vat ( Hindi for immortal tree ) is also located in the fort . Legend has it that anyone who jumps off this banyan tree becomes immortal . Laypeople are not allowed to see this tree. It is located near the southern wall under the many trees that can be seen from the outside.
  • Interesting for Indians is the Swaraj Bhawan , a building from the 1920s that was given to the Indian people by Motilal Nehru and was used at times as the headquarters of the Congress Committee . The future Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi was born here.
