Fort Tompkins

Fort Tompkins is a fort on Staten Island in New York , and it was built in 1860. However, the site was first fortified with a log house as early as 1663 . During the American War of Independence there was a redoubt for Flagstaff Fort (1776), which was captured by the British , enlarged and used until 1783. New York State built a stone fortress from 1807 to 1812. At the beginning of the 1840s, Cpt. Robert E. Lee , who lived at Fort Hamiltonwas stationed before a reconstruction of the fort on Staten Island. This was done in 1860. It controlled the forts of Morton , Hudson, and Richmond (Water Battery, later Battery Weed ). The fort was the last of the four forts in the United States to be named Fort Tompkins.

In 1974 the fort was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places .
