Fort Wadsworth Light is a lighthouse built in 1903 above Battery Weed on Staten Island in New York Harbor . The beacon marked The Narrows , the entrance to New York Harbor. It is located under the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge . Fort Wadsworth Light was part of properties transferred by the US Navy to the National Park Service in March 1995 when the Gateway National Recreation Area was established.
The range of the continuous white light was 14 nautical miles (26 km). The optics were likely relocated here from Fort Tompkins Light in 1903 . The approval of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in 1965 made the structure obsolete. After many years of inactivity, it was restored and, in 2005, volunteered to convert it to solar power .
