The Forum Hanau is a shopping center of the Lübeck investor group HBB in Hanau. With a retail space of 22,500 m², the forum is one of the largest shopping centers in the region and competes with the Hessen-Center in the Frankfurt district of Bergen-Enkheim, which previously dominated the eastern Rhine-Main area .

history

The Hanau Forum is part of a larger project to convert and redesign the city center of Hanau, which is also being marketed under the title Hanau builds around . In addition to the forum, the following infrastructure measures were or are part of the project:

  • Reconstruction of the market square with new asphalting of the road surface and construction of some buildings with glass facades for gastronomy
  • Redesign of the city bus routes with the aim of reducing the number of buses that pass through the pedestrian zone
  • Closure of the old inner-city cinema and construction of a new Kinopolis cinema on the outskirts of the city on the site of the former Pedro-Jung-Schule special school in direct competition with the multiplex cinema in nearby Nidderau
  • New construction of the Postcarré local supply center on the site of a former slaughterhouse and redesign of the nearby Westbahnhof
  • Medium-term redesign of the area around the Walloon-Dutch Church into a park, eliminating the parking spaces there
  • Long-term renovation of the housing stock in the city center, which today mainly consists of public housing from the 1950s and is to be replaced by luxury apartments in the long term.

The forum itself is part of the redesign of the Freiheitsplatz , which was temporarily used for a long time after the Second World War: the right half served as the central bus station for the city and regional bus routes, the left half served as a parking lot. This condition was considered unsatisfactory and should be resolved long ago.

An opportunity finally arose when the Karstadt branch west of the Freiheitsplatz was closed in 2010. The subsequent tender for the redesign was won by the Lübeck investor group HBB. The new shopping center, which was later named "Forum Hanau", was to extend over the western half of Freiheitsplatz and the site of the former Karstadt department store, replacing the parking lot. The eastern half was to be retained as a bus station, but built much more compact and modern.

The conversion was controversial because numerous trees had to be felled, which were listed as natural monuments. The listed bus shelter in the middle of the bus station also fell victim to the renovation work.

After three years of construction, the Hanau Forum was opened on September 10, 2015.

development

The Forum Hanau houses over 90 shops on three floors, including numerous large chains such as Rewe , H&M and TK maxx .

The City Library Hanau has moved with the opening of the old Kanzleibau on Schlossplatz in the Forum Hanau. The city archive and other historical institutions are also located here.

Connection

The Forum Hanau is located in close proximity to the central bus station in Hanau and can therefore be reached by public transport from all directions.

There is a parking garage directly below the Forum Hanau. There are also numerous other parking garages within walking distance. The fees correspond to the central inner city location.

It is also possible to arrive by bike. Although the numerous bicycle parking spaces on Freiheitsplatz were demolished in the course of the renovation, there are a number of bicycle stands at all entrances and in the side streets around the forum.
