Fotevikspärren

The Foteviksspärren ( German  "Seesperre am Fotevik" ) is a Viking Age lake barrier in the 300 m wide mouth of the Foteviken, where the bay opens to Höllviken . The bay is located in the southwest of Skåne in Sweden .

As early as 1967, Esse Ericsson presented his observations of an underwater barrier in the mouth of the Fotevik in the magazine Archäologische Luftbildfotografie. In 1981 an archaeological investigation was carried out and a wreck dating from the late Viking Age was found. Investigations in 1982 resulted in another four ships being found. One of them was called "Foteviksskeppet" ( German  "Fotevikschiff" ). It has been preserved and is now in the Malmö Museum . The barrier is two-tiered, an older one from the 980s and a younger one from the first half of the 11th century. For this phase, a ship was dendrochronologically dated to 1023 AD. It is believed that the last ships were filled with stones and sunk when the Danish Civil War broke out in 1134 to provide protection against enemy ships. Here the Danish King Niels invaded , but was defeated by the later King Erik Emune .

Directly to the north are two islands called Eskilstorpaholmarna or "Kuddarna". On the oldest map from the 1680s, the islands are shown as if they were connected to the land. This is because the water between the islands and the beach is very shallow.

The two larger ships were about 20 meters long, they were warships, while the two smaller ones with a length of about 14 meters were probably merchant ships. The ships were 2.5 to 3.0 meters wide and planked. There may be more shipwrecks in the sea. In Fotevikens Museum timely replica of the best preserved wrecks was built, a small Viking ship named Erik Emune .
