A stage ditch (also security ditch , photo ditch ) is colloquially an area separated by barriers between the stage and the auditorium. Stage trenches are primarily used for the safety of visitors and artists at concerts and music festivals . Securities present during the event , for example, take in crowd surfers or prevent visitors from entering the stage. In addition, injured visitors can quickly be taken to emergency medical care via the stage ditch . A stage ditch can also create a safety distance when using pyrotechnics .

Concert photographers can be granted temporary permission to stay in the stage pit in order to take photos of the event. This usually happens during the first three songs of the performance.
