Foville Syndrome

The Foville syndrome occurs when damage to the brain stem as alternating brainstem and is also known as syndrome of caudal bridge foot defined palsy, facial palsy and crossed hemiparesis.
Synonyms are: foville paralysis; Foville bridge syndrome; Caudal bridge hood syndrome; Latin: Hemiplegia abducento-facialis alternans; Hemiplegia alternans inferior pontina
The name refers to the first author of the first description from 1859 by the French neurologist and psychiatrist Achille-Louis-François Foville (1799–1878).
The syndrome should not be confused with Millard-Gubler syndrome .
root cause
The disease is based on a lesion in the foot of the bridge ( pars basilaris pontis ) , often tumors or circulatory disorders in the area of the basilar artery or its flow area.
Clinical manifestations
Clinical criteria of the actual Foville syndrome are:
- Ipsilateral peripheral facial palsy
- Ipsilateral palsy of the abdomen
- Contralateral hemiparesis with hemianesthesia
These are to be separated conceptually
- Foville bridge syndrome without facial nerve palsy, English Foville's syndrome II; Foville's pontine syndrome
