François-Antoine Pomey
François-Antoine Pomey (born December 8, 1618 in Pernes-les-Fontaines , † November 10, 1673 in Lyon ) was a French Jesuit, classical philologist, Romanist and lexicographer.
life and work
Pomey (also: Pomay or Pomai ) entered the Jesuit order in 1636 and was prefect at the Collège de la Trinité (today: Collège-lycée Ampère ) in Lyon in 1644 . He published numerous successful school publications, mostly in Latin, some of which were translated into French, English and German.
His French-Latin dictionary (1664, 1671) was important, which made the lack of monolingual French dictionaries before 1680 particularly relevant, not least as a basis for the creation of bilingual or trilingual dictionaries with French (e.g. French -English by Guy Miège ). A specialty of his Dictionnaire Royal were the many articles with subject group information (e.g. all body parts sv corps ).
