Born into a family of musicians, François Fernandez tried his hand at the baroque violin while learning the classical violin at the age of 12 , only two years later he devoted himself only to this variant of the violin and began studying it with Sigiswald Kuijken . At the age of seventeen he played in Kujken's La Petite Bande and received his soloist diploma in 1978.

Fernandez then played with other baroque ensembles as a soloist or concertmaster, for example with the "Kuijken Quartet", " La Chapelle Royale ", " Orchestra of the 18th Century ", "Les Agrémens", the "Ensemble 415", "Melante 81", the “Ricercar Consort”, the baroque orchestra “Les Muffattis” and others. He has always dedicated himself mainly to chamber music, at times with the Kuijken brothers, the Ricercar Consort or the Hantaï brothers.

In addition to the baroque violin, Fernandez plays the viola , viola d'amore , gamba and cello da spalla . He has taught at the music academies in Toulouse, Liège, Brussels and Trossingen. Since 1998 he has been teaching baroque violin at the Paris Conservatory . Fernandez has been head of the baroque violin class at the Dutch- speaking Royal Conservatory in Brussels since September 2009, succeeding Sigiswald Kuijken . He also regularly gives master classes in different countries in Europe and Asia.

Together with fellow musicians Philippe Pierlot and Rainer Zipperling (* 1955), the CD label "FLORA" was founded in 2002.
