François Nau

François Nau (born May 13, 1864 in Thil ; † September 2, 1931 in Paris ) was a Catholic priest , mathematician and orientalist .

François-Nicolas Nau was the eldest of five children of François-Nicolas Nau and Marguerite Longueville. After attending primary school in Longwy until 1878, he entered the Notre-Dame des Champs boys' seminary in Paris, and in 1882 the Saint-Sulpice seminary. In 1887 he became a Baccalaureus in theology and canon law, on December 17, 1887 he was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Paris .

Nau then studied mathematics and natural sciences, as well as Syriac from 1889. In 1895 he obtained the diploma of the Paris École Pratique des Hautes Études with the edition of an astronomical treatise of the Bar Hebraeus . In 1897 he received his doctorate as Docteur ès sciences.

From 1890, Nau taught mathematics and astronomy at the Institut Catholique de Paris for almost 40 years . In 1928 he became dean of the École des Sciences.

In 1927 he received a teaching assignment for Syriac at the École Pratique des Hautes Études.

In 1899 he founded the Patrologia Orientalis together with René Graffin (1858–1941) . The list of his publications includes more than 250 works.
