François Sarhan (born September 30, 1972 in Rouen ) is a French composer of new music and founder of the music theater collective CRwTH .

life and work

Sarhan studied cello at the Conservatoire National de Région de Boulogne-Billancourt, music theory and music aesthetics at the Conservatoire de Paris , poetics at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales and took part in courses at the IRCAM . From 1999, François Sarhan taught at the Université Marc Bloch in Strasbourg, from 1998 to 2002 also at the IRCAM.

His works include operas, chamber music and solo works. With the international music theater collective CRwTH (named after the Welsh string instrument Crwth ), founded in 2000 , Sarhan worked as a composer, director and interpreter on performances of his and other works, which also include spoken theater, dance and new media.

Sarhan's compositions were a. a. Played at the Donaueschinger Musiktage , the Berlin MaerzMusik Festival , the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence , the Ars Musica Brussels, the Festival Musica Strasbourg , the Brighton Festival and the Bregenz Festival .

Sarhan taught at the IRCAM Paris Institute from 1998 to 2002, and from 1999 also at the Marc Bloch University in Strasbourg. Since 2015 he has been teaching composition at the University of the Arts in Berlin and occasionally at the Music Academy in Dresden.

He wrote the book “History of Music” (2002) and is the initiator of the artists' collective CRWTH, which has been creating and performing multimedia projects since 2000.

Current projects are the film and the music theater production “Lachez tout! (Enough Already!) ”, Produced by LOD (Gent) with the Red Note Ensemble, a compilation of texts from his encyclopedia was published by the publisher JM Place and a large exhibition was organized by Chambord Castle in France.

Last works were u. a. the production “la philosophie dans le boudoir” with the ensemble “Neue Vokalsolisten Stuttgart”. From 2017 to 2018 he developed the production “The Suitcase - Verloren in Moers” as part of the Experimental Musiktheater Fund at the Moers Castle Theater.
