Françoise Pierzou

Françoise Pierzou (born December 24, 1944 in Mesnil-Simon near Paris ) is a French artist in the field of constructivist-concrete painting. She has lived and worked in Germany since 1964.

life and work

After her training at the Lycée d'Art Ganneron in Paris, Françoise Pierzou studied from 1967 to 1973 at the art academy in Munich with Jean-Jacques Deyrolle , Raimer Jochims and most recently as a master student with Günter Fruhtrunk . Since then she has been working freelance in Munich and southern France. Since 2009 she has been a member of the Art Construit International (ACI) artist group in Paris.

Françoise Pierzou's work is best known for its “ pliages ” - canvases worked on both sides, the front and back of which are presented side by side through the folding process. The folds represent a consistent further development of her space-related works. These include stick pictures (from 1975), multi-part pictures (from 1978) and wall paintings (from 1981). What many works have in common is their multi-part nature, which is often created using different materials.

All of her works question the “truth of perception”, especially the “sensual perception of spatial location (front, back, horizontally, vertically)” and challenge the viewer to “take a position”. This question of theirs was already described in 1984 by Eugen Gomringer in his poem “Before works by Françoise Pierzou”.
