France Staub (born September 29, 1920 , † July 2, 2005 in Mauritius ) was an ornithologist, herpetologist, botanist and conservationist from the island of Mauritius.

Live and act

Staub is a descendant of the French botanist Jacques Delisse . In 1944 he graduated from the Mauritius College of Agriculture . In 1951 he received his qualification as a dentist at the Medical and Dental School of Guy's Hospital in London . Back in Mauritius, he devoted most of his free time to ornithological and botanical studies on the Mascarene Islands and the neighboring islands. He published the two books Birds of the Mascarenes and Saint Brandon (1976) and Fauna of Mauritius and Associated Flora (1993) on avifauna and numerous articles in the Proceedings of the Royal Society of Arts and Sciences of Mauritius . He became a member in 1955 and was president of this historic society seven times. In 1970, Staub became chairman of the Mauritian section of the International Council for Bird Preservation (now BirdLife International ). In 1971 he joined the British Ornithologists' Union .

One of the main research areas of dust was investigations of the relationships between main pollinators such as the day geckos ( Phelsuma ) or endemic species of birds such as the Mauritius spectacle bird ( Zosterops chloronothos ) with the native host plants of the genus Trochetia .

Dedication names

In 2005, the Mauritian botanist Jean Marie Bosser named the climbing plant Cynanchum staubii from the silk plant family, discovered by Staub on the Île aux Aigrettes in 1965, in honor of France Staub.
