Jacques Delisse

Jacques Delisse (born May 13, 1773 in Dax , Landes department , France , † March 13, 1856 in Bordeaux , France) was a French pharmacist and botanist .

Life

In 1787 Delisse came to Paris to study pharmacy . In October 1800 he became a member of the research expedition to Australia led by Nicolas Baudin . In April 1801, a scurvy disease forced him to leave the expedition to Mauritius . He settled in Port Louis , where he opened the first pharmacy in Mauritius in 1804. In March 1813 he married Elisa Enouf. From this marriage there were eight children. His eldest son Theodore Delisse (1813 - ????) later became a draftsman.

On August 11, 1829, Delisse belonged to Charles Telfair , Julien Desjardins and Wenceslas Bojer to the founding members of the Société royale des Arts et des Sciences de l'île Maurice, from 1847 by decree of Queen Victoria the Royal Society of Arts and Sciences of Mauritius has been. In addition to Bojer, Delisse was the second vice-president. In 1831 he became director of the newly established Bank of Mauritius. He was also a member of the jury . Delisse's wife died in 1832 at the age of 37. In December 1848 Delisse moved back to France with his children, where he died in Bordeaux in 1856.

One of the descendants of Delisse was the Mauritian scientist France Staub (1920-2005).

Dedication names

1829 named Charles Gaudichaud-Beaupré on the Hawaii Islands endemic plant species Delissea in honor of Jacques Delisse.
