Frances Phipps

Frances M. Phipps (* 1926 in Quebec , † July 1, 2013 in New Glasgow ) was the first woman to reach the North Pole.

Life

Phipps grew up as Frances Coolin in Ottawa , Ontario and in 1946 married the Canadian pilot Welland Phipps, with whom she had 9 children. The couple founded Atlas Aviation in Resolute Bay in 1962 , which was the northernmost charter flight service in Canada at the time. On April 5, 1971, she and her husband reached the North Pole and were included in the Guinness Book of Records as the first woman at the North Pole. The couple retired in 1972 and traveled around the world in a sailing boat for 22 years. After the death of her husband, Phipps traveled around the USA and Canada in a motorhome at the age of 75.
