Francesco Baratta the Elder

Francesco Baratta the Elder (* around 1595 in Massa (or Montemarcello), † 1666 in Rome ) was an Italian sculptor.

Life and education

Francesco Baratta came to Rome around 1626 together with Andrea Bolgi and became a student and close collaborator of Gianlorenzo Bernini . In 1654 he became a member of the Accademia di San Luca . It is uncertain whether Baratta, summoned by August II, was in Dresden; In any case, sculptures by Francesco Baratta were delivered to Dresden on behalf of August II.

Baratta was married to Cecilia Tenderini; he died of a fever in Rome in the autumn of 1666.

Works

  • 1636: Christ risen for the outside staircase of the Santuario del Santissimo Crocifisso in San Miniato is his first documented work
  • 1642–1646: Ecstasy of St. Francis based on a design by Bernini in the Cappella Raimondi ; San Pietro in Montorio (Rome).
  • 1647–1648 various sculptures for St. Peter's Basilica on behalf of Bernini.
  • 1650–1651: Rio de la Plata at the Four Rivers Fountain by Bernini on Piazza Navona in Rome.
  • On behalf of August II, several groups of figures were delivered for the garden of the Dresden Zwinger : Hercules, Marsyas, Cleopatra, Lucretia and the group Hercules and Omphale . The Hercules and Carus group is exhibited in the Schaulager today.
  • The penitent Magdalena in the Catholic Court Church in Dresden
