Francesco Fortugno (born September 15, 1951 in Brancaleone , † October 16, 2005 in Locri ) was an Italian surgeon, forensic scientist and politician . He was Vice President of the Regional Council of Calabria .

In addition to his professional career, Fortugno was politically active. From 1986 to 1994 he was a member of the Democrazia Cristiana , then switched to the Partito Popolare Italiano , which went to La Margherita in 2002 . From 1999 to 2001 he was Deputy Mayor of Locri. In 2001 he took over the seat of Luigi Meduri in the Regional Council of Calabria , who was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies in the 2001 parliamentary elections in Italy . In the following regional elections in 2005 Fortugno was elected to the regional council, of which he was vice-president from May 15, 2005 until his death on October 16, 2005.

On October 16, 2005, primaries were held in Italy to determine the head of the left-wing party coalition L'Unione (Union) for the 2006 parliamentary elections in Italy . Fortugno was struck down with pistol shots by two men on the day of the primaries . The attack occurred outside a polling station in Locri. Fortugno, 54, succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital.

The reason for his murder by the 'Ndrangheta was suspected to be intransigence towards them, particularly in relation to the public health contracts with which he was involved. The population took a lively interest in his death and expressed their protest by posting white cloths from windows and balconies.

After the identification and arrest of several suspects in 2006, two perpetrators of the murder as well as the gunman and his accomplice were sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in Locri. Three other defendants received prison terms of between four and twelve years for other crimes, including forming a mafia-style association. A 'Ndrangheta member arrested in November 2005 for other crimes and who helped investigative authorities identify the perpetrators had committed suicide in 2007.
