Francis Macnaghten

Sir Francis Workman-Macnaghten, 1st Baronet (August 1763 - November 22, 1843 ), known as Francis Macnaghten until 1823, was Supreme Court Justice in Madras and Bengal and Second Chief of the MacNaughton Clan.

Life

Francis Macnaghten was the scion of a Scottish family who settled in County Antrim , Ireland . His father Edmund Macnaghten (* 1680), since his first marriage had remained childless, remarried in 1761 - at an old age. From this marriage two sons were born. The older, Edmund Alexander MacNaghten , went into politics and sat for Antrim in parliament ; the younger, Francis, became a lawyer in India .

In 1809 Francis Macnaghten was a judge ( Puisne Judge ) at the Supreme Court in Madras and beaten to a Knight Bachelor . In 1815 he was transferred to the Supreme Court in Calcutta , Bengal. In 1823 he officially adopted the additional surname Workman and their coat of arms. In 1825 he retired. After the death of his older brother in 1832, he followed this as clan chief and on July 16, 1836, was raised to Baronet , of Bushmills House in the County of Antrim and Mahan in the County of Armagh .

The marriage to Letitia Dunkin resulted in six sons and five daughters. The second son, Sir William Macnaghten , was killed in Kabul in December 1841 .
