Francis William Reitz

Francis William Reitz (born October 5, 1844 in Swellendam , † March 27, 1934 in Cape Town ) was a politician and lawyer in what is now South Africa .

Life

After studying in Great Britain, he returned to South Africa in 1868 to prospect for diamonds. Unsuccessful, he returned to the legal profession and was elected to the Cape Province Parliament in 1872 .

Two years later, at the request of President Johannes Henricus Brand, he was appointed chairman of the Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein , and shortly afterwards as chief judge of the Orange Free State . Reitz held this position for 13 years. From 1881 he was chairman of the Afrikanerbond in the Orange Free State.

From 1889 to 1895 he was President of the Orange Free State. During the Second Boer War he was State Secretary (Foreign Minister) of the South African Republic .

The town of Reitz in the province of Free State is named after Reitz .
