Francis X. Bushman Jr. (born May 1, 1903 in Baltimore , Maryland as Ralph Everly Bushman , † April 16, 1978 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .

life and career

Ralph Bushman was born in 1903 to the future silent film star Francis X. Bushman and his first wife Josephine Fladine Duval. He followed his father into the acting business and was never quite as well known as his father, but nevertheless appeared in around 60 films over a period of over 20 years. In his first films he was usually announced in the opening credits as Ralph Bushman , but from 1925 exclusively as Francis X. Bushman junior . He had one of his first notable roles as one of the murderous family members in the Buster-Keaton comedy Darn Hospitality (1923). He then took on major roles in the college film Brown of Harvard (1923) on the side of William Haines and Jack Pickford and in the drama Four Sons (1928) by John Ford . Bushman was mostly seen in roles as an elegant young man.

With the dawn of the sound film at the end of the 1920s, his roles slowly became smaller and after 1934 he was rarely mentioned in the opening credits. After a role as a German soldier in the war film Assignment in Brittany , he retired from acting in 1943 due to a lack of offers. In the early 1950s he was working as a repairman on the film Operation Pacific , where he met John Wayne - he remembered Bushman well, as Wayne had his first job in the film business as Bushman's double .

Bushman, who was married to Beatrice Dante from July 10, 1924 until his death, died in 1978 at the age of 74.
