Francisco de Herrera the Elder (* 1576 in Seville , † 1656 in Madrid ; also Francisco Herrera ) was a Spanish painter who was based in Seville.

Seville was larger than Madrid in terms of population during Herrera's lifetime and had a great influence on Spanish art. The painter's workshops based in Seville not only supplied the churches and monasteries of Seville and its wider surroundings with paintings, but also the newly emerging churches and monasteries in Argentina , Mexico and Peru . One of the workshops that supplied these paintings was that of Herrera. Herrera was one of the head of the Sevillian school of painting and created, among other things, the decorations of the episcopal palace. He is considered a technically brilliant painter. His religious pictures and folk genre scenes are characterized by fluid brush writing and expressive expression.

Herrera is particularly important in terms of art history, as he was Diego Velázquez's teacher for a few months . Diego Velázquez entered his workshop when he was just under 10 or 11 years old. However, he quickly switched to the workshop of Francisco Pacheco del Río , as he could not cope with Herrera's temperamental nature. He was also familial with Juan van der Hamen y León through his marriage to Eugenia de Herrera Barnuevo and appeared as one of the three character witnesses when he applied for the wedding.

Herrera's son, Francisco de Herrera the Younger , was also a painter and builder.
