Francisco Júlio de Caldas Aulete

Francisco Júlio de Caldas Aulete (* 1826 in Lisbon ; † 23 May 1878 ibid) was a Portuguese politician, didactician, Romance scholar , Lusitanist and lexicographer.

life and work

Caldas Aulete was a high school teacher in Lisbon, and from 1869 to 1872 a member of the Portuguese assembly of estates . He published numerous didactic works on the Portuguese language and literature, including a grammar (1864).

Caldas Aulete left behind a dictionary manuscript that was edited by António Lopes dos Santos Valente three years after his death in 1881. After the dictionary had only reached three Portuguese editions in 70 years, despite its lexicographical quality, it was considerably more successful in Brazil from 1958 and has been revised up to the present day.
