António Lopes dos Santos Valente (born December 4, 1839 in Sertã , † April 12, 1896 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese author, Lusitanist and lexicographer.

life and work

Valente studied law in Coimbra (graduating in 1863) and worked in the civil service in Vila de Rei and Lisbon. He is best known as a lexicographer. Francisco Júlio de Caldas Aulete left behind a dictionary manuscript that was edited by Valente three years after his death in 1881. After the dictionary had only reached three Portuguese editions in 70 years, despite its lexicographical quality, it was considerably more successful in Brazil from 1958 and has been revised up to the present day.
