Francisco Javier Ugarte Pagés
Francisco Javier Ugarte y Pagés , in Catalan Francesc Xavier Ugarte i Pagès , (born February 24, 1852 in Barcelona , † June 27, 1919 in Madrid ) was a Spanish lawyer and politician.
Life
Ugarte y Pagés founded the weekly El Comercio Español in Madrid in 1876 , and was also an editor at El Tiempo and La Época . In 1891 he became a member of the Partido Conservador ('Conservative Party') from the Province of Ourense and retained this seat through all elections between 1896 and 1903. Only in 1898 did he get a seat for Cuba . In 1903 he renounced his seat of parliament in order to take a place in the Senate as senador vitalicio ('Senator for life').
During the reign of María Cristina Ugarte y Pagés was Spanish Interior Minister (23 October 1900 to 6 March 1901) in the government of Marcelo Azcárraga Palmero and during the reign of her son Alfonso XIII. Minister of Justice (December 16, 1904 to June 23, 1905). Later he was Minister for the Promotion of Spain in Eduardo Dato's cabinet (October 27, 1913 to October 25, 1915).
