Francisco de Morais

Francisco de Morais , also Francisco de Morais Cabral or Francisco de Moraes (* around 1500 in Bragança , † 1572 in Évora ) was a Portuguese novelist and treasurer .

Life

Morais was treasurer in the household of the Portuguese King John III. He came to Paris in 1540 as secretary of the Portuguese ambassador and there began to write the chivalric romance "Palmeirim de Inglaterra", which became immensely popular. After Amadis de Gaula, the book is the second most important work in this genre. It was completed in 1544 and first published in Spanish in 1547. The first Portuguese edition was available in 1567. Because of its clear style, the romance has even been praised by Miguel de Cervantes . Morais also wrote three moral dialogues. He was murdered in Évora.
