Franciskus "Frans" Van Daele (born October 24, 1947 in Oostburg ) is a former Belgian diplomat and, among other things, permanent representative of the country to the EU and NATO . From 2009 to 2013 he headed Herman Van Rompuy's cabinet since his appointment as the first permanent president of the European Council . From 2013 to 2017 he was head of cabinet of the King of the Belgians .

Life

Franciskus Van Daele was born in the Netherlands in 1947 . He studied classical philology and art history at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium and completed his studies with a master's degree . In 1971 he joined the diplomatic corps . From 1997 to 2002 he was appointed Permanent Representative of Belgium to the EU. His analytical negotiating skills became evident during the European financial and institutional negotiations in 1999 and 2000, as well as during the Belgian Presidency . In 2006 he became Permanent Representative of Belgium to NATO . From 2009 to 2012 Van Daele headed the cabinet of the first President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy. As head of cabinet and chief strategist, Van Daele knew the EU institutions newly created by the Lisbon Treaty very well.

As chief strategist of the President of the European Council, Van Daele described his work as follows: “Some see the article concerning us as a purely representative function. For us, the contract means much more than just shaking hands. "

In 2013 he was appointed Head of Cabinet by the new King of the Belgians, Philippe . He held this office until 2017.

Franciskus Van Daele is married to Chris Deroover, with whom he has three grown children. In 2006 Van Daele was ennobled.
