Franciszek Morawski

Franciszek Morawski (dt. Franz Morawski ) (born April 2, 1783 in Pudliszki , † December 12, 1861 in Lubonia near Leszno ) was a Polish general and war minister of the Polish national government during the November uprising of 1831. He has also worked as a writer and Poets made a name.

Life

In 1806 he joined the Polish army. In Napoleon's campaign of 1807 he distinguished himself on various occasions. During the campaign of 1809 he was adjutant to General Stanisław Fiszer (1769-1812) and became chief of his staff. Morawski took part in the Russian campaign in 1812 as commander of an infantry division. Also in this campaign he took part in various battles. In 1813 he was chief of staff under General Antoni Paweł Sułkowski and took part in the Battle of Leipzig . In 1813 and 1814 he was head of the general staff of the Polish units.

After the end of the Grand Duchy of Warsaw , he served in the army of the Kingdom of Poland ( Congress Poland ) from 1815 . Since 1820 he was a member of the Association of Friends of Science and belonged to a Masonic lodge . He also ran a literary salon in Warsaw. Between 1820 and 1826 he commanded a brigade.

During the November uprising from January 1831 he fought on the side of the insurgents. He was initially responsible for organizing the army on the General Staff. Later he was temporarily Minister of War of the Polish national government. After all, he was part of a delegation that was supposed to negotiate with the Russians to end the war. He resigned from this task because of disputes in the Polish camp. As a result, the Russian negotiators no longer felt bound by the concessions made to him and demanded complete submission.

After the end of the war he was initially exiled, but returned to Poland in 1833 and settled in Lubon in the Prussian province of Posen . He devoted himself to his literary work there and was a member of the Society of Friends of Science in Poznan.

In literary terms it already emerged at the time of the Napoleonic Wars. In 1813 he gave a much-noticed funeral oration for Józef Antoni Poniatowski . He was a translator from George Gordon Byron into Polish. He has also translated French authors. His story "My grandfather's small noble farm" was also known. There were also a number of poems and fables.

Morawski was among other things bearer of the Order Virtuti Militari , the Order of Saint Stanislaus and the Officer's Cross of the Legion of Honor .
